Thermal Images
QWIP 8 - 9 µm
April 20, 2004

These images were made using the technology of Indigo Systems. They were kind enough to send them to us for our use here. These are photographs of one man's suit with that man in the suit. We have left the words they put into the photos where they put them. All photos are unretouched, in the size they sent to us.

The man in his suit is in a large open space with either rocks or bare dirt in it. He is away from distracting natural signatures so that the suit could be evaluated apart from and in comparison to other environmental features. Distance is approximately twenty yards. We have no details on this setting, other than his comments that he was in swamp for a long time, getting these photos taken.

Note the heat radiating from the rocks, and compare this with the controlled heat released from the ghillie. Imagine the shooter tucked into those rocks or using a scope in the background image, which is where he would be if this weren't a field evaluation.

The camera has now changed position to be closer to and get a clearer image of the suit. Distance is mow 15 yards or less.

Here, he is standing upright. Note his hands and feet, but also note that his body does not show that degree of heat being given off that you would expect to see in a human.

Note, as the shooter turns, that the pads and skids on the front surface of the suit are provided for comfort during a low crawl (or 'stalk') or extended hide (12 hours plus). Observe the temperature of the burlap garnish hanging to his sides, and how that outline signature vanishes into its background.

Now he has removed his hood. We have been asked not to show his face on the site, and I'm sure you can relate to why he does not wish it to be seen. Therefore, we have altered this photograph to black out his features.

Note the plated detail of the pads across the shooter's stomach and chest, and on his forearms and legs. His ankles are concealed by a ripstop mesh designed to absorb reflected signature, keep the body cool and to allow heat to escape from the boots without signature.

Here he is joined by a friend, whose face must also remain unseen. This is the front of the ghillie suit, which is completely padded for comfort while crawling.

Note that the ring on the hand of the man in civilian clothing is clearly visible to this camera, as are the many details of his clothing.

Again, compare the signature of the garnish visible around the shooter with the vegetation in his immediate environment.

We hope that you have enjoyed seeing these photographs as much as we have enjoyed them. We are deeply in debt to our customer, who posed for these photographs unasked, and to Indigo Systems, who took them and sent to us to allow us to see how our suit works.
